Mini-Review: Bontrager Foray Shoe

A BLOG POST BY RICH ROTHWELL

The Foray is a no nonsense, all-round off-road SPD shoe that works well for Trail, CX, XC, or gravel riding. It is stiff enough to put the power down, but has enough flex to make walking comfortable. For this reason, I have steered away from super stiff and lightweight race shoes, as I find a shoe like the Foray to be both comfortable and versatile.

A tough rubberised toe protector extends right round the front of your foot, giving loads of protection from rock kicks and strikes. The shoe offers a good deal of protection to your foot, which adds to its versatile nature. (In our northern climate a robust shoe makes sense generally).

It's crucial to get the right fit when it comes to cycling shoes; most importantly, a good fitting shoe is more comfortable. (Try in store to get that fit right!) A good fit also helps control on the bike; if the shoe holds your foot well, your foot does not move around in the shoe and gives a solid connected feel.

I've found the perfect fit in the Bontrager Foray. The very reliable Boa retention system holds my foot snug without any pinch points. It's an exceptionally comfortable shoe for hike-a-bike and walking or running off the bike. (You can also add toe studs for muddy or grassy terrain). The sole is very grippy on both wet and dry rock and is generally very confidence inspiring when clambering across rocks or pushing up a hill.

I've had these for a couple of months now. They are well worn in and fit like the proverbial glove. Recommended.
