We’re thrilled to announce two major developments that will put Kielder Forest on the map for cyclists across the UK! On the third anniversary of Storm Arwen, the beloved Lonesome Pine Mountain Bike Trail has reopened following an incredible £167,000 restoration project. This coincides with an exciting new chapter for Team Cycles—we’ve just received the keys to our new bike hire centre in Kielder Forest, with renovations starting soon and an official opening planned for February 2025.
The Lonesome Pine Trail: A Triumph of Resilience and Accessibility
Closed since the devastating impact of Storm Arwen in November 2021, the Lonesome Pine Trail is back and better than ever. Thanks to Forestry England’s ambitious recovery efforts, supported by the RAMP funding initiative, the trail has been upgraded to include:
- 3.5km of thrilling descents leading down to Kielder village.
- Adaptive mountain biking features, ensuring riders of all abilities, including those with disabilities, can enjoy the experience.
The trail, renowned for its stunning views of Northumberland and proximity to the Kielder Observatory, is more than just a ride—it’s a symbol of resilience, innovation, and inclusivity.
Forestry England’s Chief Executive, Mike Seddon, commented, “The reopening of the Lonesome Pine Trail is a testament to the incredible partnership efforts and dedication of our teams and supporters. It sets a new standard for adaptive mountain biking while restoring a cherished attraction for visitors.”
Team Cycles’ New Bike Hire Centre: Coming February 2025
We couldn’t be more excited to play a bigger role in Kielder Forest’s cycling adventures. Our new bike hire centre, situated near the Lonesome Pine Trail, will soon undergo renovations to create a hub for riders of all ages and abilities. From mountain bike enthusiasts to families looking to explore the forest, we aim to provide high-quality bikes and expert support to ensure everyone has an unforgettable experience.
Opening in February 2025, the centre will include:
- A wide range of hire bikes
- Workshop
- Clothing, parts, and accessories
- Guided rides, partnerships and much more
