Meet The New Trek Domane

The Domane has always been Trek’s answer for riders who want speed without signing up for a brutally aggressive race-bike position. For Gen 5, Trek has pushed that idea further with a completely new frame shape, cleaner lines and more personality built into the platform.

The biggest shift is that the new Domane feels less boxed into the traditional “endurance road bike” category. There’s more room for bigger tyres on selected models, including up to 40mm clearance across the range, plus new cockpit options including riser handlebars on several builds. Are we seeing a dynamic change in the gravel scene? These changes mean more comfort on broken roads, more confidence on long days and a genuine ability to head onto light gravel without feeling like you’ve brought the wrong bike.

At the sharp end, the SLR models use Trek’s highest-level 900 Series OCLV Carbon, while the SL bikes step into 500 Series OCLV Carbon and bring much of the same new-generation thinking to a more accessible price point.

Top-Tier Domance, Built Around Sram RED

The Domane SLR 9 AXS Gen 5 starts with Trek’s lightest 900 Series OCLV Carbon frame and adds a SRAM RED AXS 2x12 wireless drivetrain with an integrated power meter. Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51 carbon wheels give it a fast, deep-section setup designed to carry speed without losing the long-distance character of the Domane.

A carbon riser handlebar puts a little more emphasis on comfort at the front of the bike, making this a serious option for riders who want flagship components but don’t want the aggressive position of an outright race bike. It’s light, fast and equipped for everything from big-mile days to fast group rides and endurance events.

One Chainring, Thirteen Gears

This is the outlier of the range — and potentially one of the most interesting. The Domane SLR 9 AXS 1x Gen 5 is Trek’s lightest Domane build, combining the 900 Series OCLV Carbon frame with a SRAM RED AXS 1x13 drivetrain, integrated power meter and lightweight Aeolus RSL 37 carbon wheels. One chainring, thirteen gears and fewer components keep the setup clean and minimalist.

Up front, Trek swaps the riser bar for the Aero RSL integrated bar/stem used on the Madone, putting the rider into a lower and more aggressive position. It takes the comfort and long-distance pedigree of the Domane and gives it a much racier personality, ideal for someone who wants endurance-bike versatility but still wants to go properly fast.

Dura-Ace Goes The Distance

The Domane SLR 9 Gen 5 is the Shimano flagship, combining Trek’s 900 Series OCLV Carbon frame with a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 2x12 drivetrain. Shifting is fast and precise, while Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51 OCLV Carbon wheels give the bike the speed and efficiency you’d expect from a top-end road build.

The carbon riser bar keeps the front end more forgiving for long hours in the saddle, so you’re getting race-level components without being forced into a full race-bike riding position. If you want Dura-Ace performance with the added comfort and versatility of the new Domane platform, this sits right at the top of the list.

Force AXS, Full SLR Performance

The Domane SLR 7 AXS Gen 5 keeps the same premium 900 Series OCLV Carbon frame but pairs it with SRAM Force AXS 2x12. You still get fully wireless shifting and an integrated power meter, making this a particularly strong build for riders who train with power but don’t necessarily need to step all the way up to SRAM RED.

Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 carbon wheels provide plenty of depth for faster road riding, while the carbon riser bar keeps things comfortable when the mileage starts climbing. It gives you the top-level Domane chassis with a component package that still leaves very little wanting.

Across the range, the new Trek Domane Gen 5 brings a completely redesigned frame, increased tyre clearance and a wider range of setups than ever before. From comfortable riser-bar builds to lightweight 1x options with race-focused cockpits, it’s a faster, more versatile Domane built for long road miles, rougher surfaces and everything in between.

The SLR Sweet Spot

The Domane SLR 7 Gen 5 pairs Trek’s lightest 900 Series OCLV Carbon with a Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12 drivetrain and Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 OCLV Carbon wheels. It’s a combination that gives you electronic shifting, a fast carbon wheelset and the highest-level Domane frame without pushing all the way into Dura-Ace territory.

The more comfortable carbon riser bar suits the bike’s long-distance intentions, while the new-generation Domane platform adds more all-road versatility than before. For riders looking for a high-end endurance bike that can still move when the pace picks up, the SLR 7 makes a lot of sense.

A Simplified 1x

The Domane SL 7 AXS 1x brings the simplified 1x concept to Trek’s 500 Series OCLV Carbon frame. A SRAM Force AXS E1 1x13 drivetrain gives you a wide gear range without a front derailleur, while Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 carbon wheels keep the bike quick when you’re back on smoother roads.

This is also where the new Domane’s increased versatility really starts to stand out, with clearance for tyres up to 40mm. Fit a larger-volume tyre and suddenly rough back roads, broken tarmac and light gravel become part of the route rather than something to avoid. The riser bar adds comfort up front and completes what is a very modern take on the endurance bike.

The All-Rounder

The Domane SL 6 AXS uses Trek’s 500 Series OCLV Carbon frame with a SRAM Rival AXS 2x12 wireless drivetrain, giving you clean electronic shifting without moving into Force or RED territory. Bontrager Aeolus Elite 50 carbon wheels are already fitted as standard, adding a proper deep-section carbon setup straight out of the box.

You also get 40mm tyre clearance and the new riser bar, which makes the SL 6 particularly easy to adapt to different kinds of riding. Run quicker road tyres for fast summer miles or go larger when comfort, rough surfaces and gravel start creeping into the route. It’s arguably one of the most versatile builds in the new range.

Keeping It Simple

The Domane SL 5 strips things back without stripping away what makes the new platform interesting. You still get the 500 Series OCLV Carbon frame, the new Domane shape and 40mm tyre clearance, but shifting comes from a straightforward Shimano 105 12-speed mechanical drivetrain. No batteries, no wireless setup, just dependable mechanical shifting.

The riser bar brings some extra comfort to the cockpit, while the increased tyre clearance gives you plenty of room to change the character of the bike through tyre choice. For riders who want the versatility of the new Domane but aren’t interested in paying extra for electronic shifting, the SL 5 could easily be the sensible pick of the range.

The story with Gen 5 isn’t just that the Domane looks different. Trek has given the platform a broader remit. You can build it around deep carbon wheels and electronic groupsets for fast road riding, choose the lightweight 1x SLR 9 for something considerably racier, or make use of the 40mm clearance on the SL models and start including rough roads and light gravel in your route planning.

It’s still unmistakably a Domane. Comfortable, capable and designed for serious mileage, but this generation gives you more freedom over how and where you ride it. The new Trek Domane range will be available from Team Cycles.
